Ajmer bandh peaceful; SP shifted

Officers in charge of three police stations sent to Police Lines

Communist Party of India (Marxist) demands judicial inquiry

JAIPUR: A bandh called in Ajmer to protest against a police lathi-charge on Bharatiya Janata Party activists, Municipal Council workers and lawyers on Monday passed off peacefully on Tuesday. About 35 persons, including Municipal Council chairman Dharmendra Gehlot, were injured in the clash with the police.

The State Government removed Ajmer Superintendent of Police S. Sengathir and asked him to wait for his posting orders and shifted Anand Kumar Srivastava from Bharatpur to Ajmer as the new SP. Besides, officers in charge of three police stations in Ajmer were sent to the Police Lines.

The dispute began when the BJP activists and lawyers supporting the party went to the SP office on Monday to submit a memorandum against registration of a case against Mr. Gehlot. After an altercation with police officers, a large number of Municipal Council workers gathered in the SP’s office and allegedly manhandled the policemen. In the police lathi-charge that followed, lawyers, BJP office-bearers and some journalists covering the incident were injured. Agitated policemen also boycotted the mess on Monday evening and demanded action against the hooligans.

While Congress general secretary and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has opposed the removal of the Ajmer SP, the CPI (M) demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident. CPI (M) State Secretariat member Ravindra Shukla said t that the BJP and its sister organisations were flouting the law with impunity and the government led by the party was resorting to repression of all public movements by force.
