MADURAI: A two-day national symposium on ‘Frontier areas in chemistry’ is being organised by the American College here on January 10 and 11 as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of its postgraduate Chemistry Department. The college has also arranged an alumni meeting of postgraduate chemistry students on January 12. Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, T. Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar, Principal, said that the department, functioning since 1957, was a ‘jewel in the crown’ of the college. Stating that there was a large set of distinguished alumni, Dr. Jaikumar said that they included former Vice-Chancellors, civil servants, police officials and research scientists. P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, will inaugurate the symposium. Mathew John, Head, PG and Research Department of Chemistry, said that the symposium would focus on green chemistry, nanotechnology, photochemistry and polymer technology.
