Sacred Heart in the lead

Staff Reporter

On the second day of Ernakulam district higher secondary schools arts festival

KOCHI: Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Thevara, was leading the point tally at the end of the second day of the Ernakulam district higher secondary schools (HSS) arts festival on Tuesday.

The school had won 48 points. SNMHSS, Maliankara, was close behind with 47 points.

The day began with the mimicry competition held at Government Girls HSS, the main venue of the event. Contrary to high expectations, the event failed to win the hearts of the audience. Majority of the items lacked originality.

The judges pointed out that students needed to innovate besides staying away from clichéd numbers. Shabeeb C. M. of SNMHSS, Maliankara, won the boy’s event. Lakshmi P.V. of Ashramam HSS, Perumbavoor, bagged the first prize in the girls’ category.

Mixed response

The drama competition evoked mixed response among the audience. A few teams excelled through their perfect timing and acting skills.

Some of the productions also tried to highlight the friction between the government and religious groups.

Majority of the government school representatives who participated in the drama competition said that they had little financial support for staging a production.

Aided schools were better equipped, as they had allocated separate funds for such cultural events.

Bharatanatyam event witnessed good participation but the artistes on stage were disappointed thanks to the empty chairs and lukewarm response from the audience.
