Bail for former councillor

Staff Reporter

To attend daughter’s wedding

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to former Municipal Corporation councillor Sharda Jain for three weeks to attend her daughter’s wedding on January 19.

Sharda has been serving life imprisonment in the Atma Ram Gupta murder case of August 2002. Atma Ram was also a municipal councillor.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice B.N. Chaturvedi and Justice G.S. Sistani granted the interim bail to her.

A Delhi court had in 2006 sentenced Sharda, her brother Rajkumar Jain, two contract killers and two others to life imprisonment in the case. The contract killers -- Pushpender and Nirvikar -- had gunned down Atma Ram in the presence of Sharda and the other convicts at Chhajjupur village in Ghazibad. Village Pradhan Roshan Singh had at the instance of Sharda hired Pushpender and Nirvikar for Rs.60,000 to eliminate Atma Ram.
