TIRUCHI: A delegation of representatives from service and consumer organisations, led by the Tiruchi MP L. Ganesan, called on the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday to press for the upgradation of the K.A.P.Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital in the city as a super-speciality hospital. Service organisations and political parties of Tiruchi have long been pressing for the upgradation of the hospital ever since A. Raja, who as the then Union Health Minister, announced a few years back that the hospital would be upgraded on par with All India Institute of Medical Sciences at a cost of Rs.100 crore. Subsequently, a team from the Union Health Ministry had made an assessment of the hospital infrastructure in 2003. Project shifted
However, the project was later shifted to Salem, provoking a public outcry in the city. Political parties, service and consumer organisations of Tiruchi had even formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC), under the chairmanship of Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman to lobby for the cause after the project was shifted to Salem. A series of agitations were organised by various organisations in the wake of the decision, including a human chain got up under the auspices of the JAC. No action so far
Following the agitations, the State Government had stated that it would sanction funds to upgrade the Hospital. But the project has not materialised so far. The recent announcement by the Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss that the Centre would set up another super-speciality hospital in Tamil Nadu has revived the public clamour that the Tiruchi Hospital be upgraded. Follow up
As a follow-up, the delegation called on Mr. Karunanidhi to impress on him the need for upgrading the hospital in Tiruchi to benefit the people in the central districts. “The Chief Minister gave us a patient hearing and assured to do the needful,” said M. Sekaran, convenor, Federation of Service Organisations, who was part of the delegation.
