ON-THE-SPOT STUDY: Labour Minister T.M.Anbarasan inspecting the underground drainage project of Pallavaram Municipality on Tuesday. TAMBARAM: The underground drainage project in Pallavaram Municipality will be completed by January, 2009, Labour Welfare Minister T. M. Anbarasan said on Tuesday. The Rs.52.70-crore project, started in January, 2006, was scheduled for completion in mid-2007 . Original estimates put the project cost at Rs.37 crore, but was revised to Rs.47 crore when civil works started. It was once again revised to its present cost of Rs.52.70 crore after new areas were included. Split into five packages, work on road cutting for laying sewer lines and construction of sub-pumping stations began simultaneously. Due to litigations over the site of the main pumping station, the project ran into rough weather, the most important cause for delay. While speaking at a government function in Chromepet in April last year, Mr.Anbarasan said the project would be completed in June 2008. When reminded about that, he said issues relating to the delay were sorted out finally and assured that the project would be completed by January 2009. As of now, 70 per cent of the project works was over, he said. Two major tasks ahead of them were to build the main pumping station in Keelkattalai and sewers to transport sewage from here to the treatment plant at Perungudi. An official note stated that of the project cost, Rs.15 crore has been contributed by residents. Municipal Chairman E. Karunanidhi, who was also present on the occasion, said there was an inflation in the project cost owing to the delay in starting work by the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime. He feared that the project cost might escalate by another Rs.10 crore to Rs.15 crore. Kancheepuram Collector Santhosh K Misra was also present at the meeting. DemonstrationMeanwhile, led by B. Valarmathi, former Rural Industries Minister, AIADMK activists staged a demonstration in Pallavaram on Tuesday morning, protesting the delay in completion of the sewer project. P.Dhan Singh, former Municipal Chairman, said no other work had suffered as much delay as this project in Pallavaram and said that to mitigate the suffering of the people, it should be completed at the earliest.
