Auto union demands hike in minimum fare

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Even as a union of autorickshaw drivers has called for stopping all their vehicles on Friday to seek an increase in minimum fare, another group is opposing the call stating that the increase sought is too high.

The Autorickshaw Driver’s Union has called for a bandh on Friday to pressurse the Government to increase the minimum fare following rise in prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas. The union, which claims to have 15,000 members, has sought Rs. 20 as a minimum fare, which is Rs. 8 more than the present fare of Rs. 12.

On the other hand, the Auto Drivers Unions Federation said it would not support the call given by the union. President of the federation N. Mayalagu said though there was a need for an increase in the minimum fare, the union’s demand, he said, was at a higher side. “We have sought for fixing the minimum fare at Rs.15,” he said.
