Belgium company dedicates PHC to Killai residents

BOOST TO HEALTHCARE: Health Minister M.R.K.Panneerselvam inaugurating a primary health centre funded by the UCB Group of Belgium, at Killai on Tuesday.

CUDDALORE: Health Minister M.R.K.Panneerselvam inaugurated a Primary Health Centre constructed at the cost of Rs.35 lakh by the UCB Group of Belgium, a biopharmaceutical company, at Killai near here on Tuesday.

The company manufactures pharmaceutical and biotechnology products for treating disorders in the central nervous system, allergy, respiratory diseases, inflammatory disorders and oncology.

It has offices in Mumbai and Bangalore and a plant at Vapi. Globally, the UCB has its operations in over 40 countries (UCB India Pvt. Ltd was started in 1959) with staff strength of 1,200.

The staff had contributed a day’s salary and the company reciprocated the gesture by contributing similar amount to undertake the reconstruction works in tsunami-affected areas.

The Minister said the company would earmark another Rs.15 lakh for the maintenance of the PHC.

Two doctors (one male and one female) had been posted at the PHC to run it round-the-clock.

Equipped with modern facility it would cater to the requirements of the people in 18 villages.

The Minister thanked Varadharajan, who donated a two-acre site for the PHC, and the UCB for its gesture.

With the appointment of 3,300 doctors and 3,400 nurses almost all the vacancies in the government hospitals in the State had been filled. Soon, 594 doctors would be appointed for the medical colleges.

Medical camps

Under the Varumunkappom Thittam 4,827 camps were conducted, benefiting 50 lakh people. A sum of Rs.226 crore had been earmarked for the development of government hospitals on a par with the private ones, he said.

The Minister gave away revolving funds to two SHGs and Rs. 10,000 each to two physically challenged persons.

Executive vice-president of the UCB Jean-Peirre Pradier said the company felt proud to dedicate the PHC to the people in this region. It was the outcome of the hard work and the faith of its employees to build a better future for the locals.

District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo said that Rs. 9 crore had been sanctioned for the construction of a bridge across the Vellar, linking Killai to Parangipettai.

Development works to the tune of Rs. 4 crore were being undertaken in Killai, he said.

Killai Ravichandran, Chairman of Killai Town Panchayat, Charles Antony Johnson, executive director, UCB, N.Raja, Joint Director (Health), R.Meera, Deputy Director (Health) and others participated.
