Curb extremism in Tamil Nadu: BJP

MADURAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government should deal with extremism with an iron hand to prevent the spread of activities of Naxalites and Maoists, said State president of the Bharatiya Janata Party L. Ganesan here on Tueday.
Addressing a press conference, Mr. Ganesan alleged that the State Government’s “soft approach” resulted in the spread of Maoists’ activities in Theni district. It should probe the nexus between Naxalites and Maoists in Tamil Nadu in the light of the recent arrest of Altaf Ahmed Khan, alleged to be member of an extremist outfit in Kashmir, at Kumuli.
It was unfortunate that extremism, which was present “from Nepal to Nellore” during the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rule, had spread to Varushanadu in Theni district now, he said.
The BJP leader claimed that Gujarat had witnessed development as it remained a haven of peace.
Political realignment
On possible political realignment in the State, Mr. Ganesan said that though no formal talks were taking place in this direction there was consensus among political parties such as the BJP, the AIADMK and the Janata Party on issues such as ‘Ramar Sethu’ and the Gujarat elections. The BJP and the AIADMK were moving in “the same direction,” but, at the moment, there was no talk of forging an alliance.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had accepted an invitation for dinner from AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, during his forthcoming visit to Chennai, Mr. Ganesan said. He ruled out the possibility of a third front making an impact at the national level in a bipolar polity.
Mr. Ganesan attributed the delay in implementation of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project to “other reasons” than a petition pending in court.
