TIRUCHI: The State Highways Department has drawn a proposal for constructing an additional road bridge along the existing one near the Railway Junction in the city. The proposal is likely to be included in next year’s (2008-09) projects to be taken up by the Department. The bridge has been a major traffic bottleneck and the city police have installed multiple signals to restrict traffic to one way as the bridge is too narrow to accommodate two-way traffic. The bridge, leading from the Aristo Hotel Traffic Island and the Railway Junction, runs across railway lines to connect Mannarpuram Road (leading to Chennai Bypass Road) and the Madurai Highway. Service and residents organisations have been pressing for widening of the bridge in view of frequent traffic snarls and accidents at the spot. Annexe to existing oneThe Highways Department has recently proposed to construct a new bridge as an annexe to the existing bridge to provide a link between Madurai Road and Railway Junction Road. It is estimated to cost about Rs.50 crore roughly (excluding the structure on the Railway portion). Sources said the proposal is likely to be sanctioned next year and the government order would be issued after taking the concurrence of the Railways.
