Their art brings them honour

Impressive work: Bharathiyar Palkalai Koodam Principal Sirpi M. Jayaraman looks at the paintings of students at an exhibition at the institute in Puducherry on Wednesday.

PUDUCHERRY: It was a day to felicitate students and a lecturer of Bharathiar Palkalai Koodam whose paintings received awards for 2007 from Camelin Art Foundation.

Director of the Art and Culture Department and college Principal Sirpi M. Jayaraman felicitated Kaviarasan, a final year student of painting, and R. Sekar, lecturer of painting at the Department of Fine Arts, for receiving awards and participating in an exhibition in December in Hyderabad.

Kaviarasan received the award and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 in the student category for painting two self-portraits in one frame. His painting was said to have expressed a deep emotion.

Mr. Sekar, lecturer, who received the award for the second time in the professional category, had painted ‘Dream’, which portrays a lady with an elephant on her lap.

“It is not possible in reality, but it is in a dream. I am doing a series on elephants to show its link with humans, how it is so faithful to humans and its position in religion,” he said. The white and black drawing with a silvery background won him a cash award of Rs. 25,000 and a chance to go on an all-India tour covering places of artistic importance.

Other students of the college whose paintings were displayed at the Camelin art exhibition in Hyderabad and whose works were printed in the catalogue too were honoured. Vasanthakumar doing his third year; Babu, Sivanesan and Kanchana in their second year; and Rathnavelu and Sreejith in their final year were honoured.
