Mirror to social issues

Of The People

Of The People, directed and produced by Jayaraj, mirrors contemporary social and political issues in society. The film is the last of a trilogy that began with For The People. Sreekumar Sreyas has written the script.

After three years in prison, Aravind, Ishwar and Shafeek (Arun, Arjun and Padmakumar), three youth known for their commitment to society, are released. By then, the political landscape has changed and a new dispensation of the Left is in power. The youth decide to distance themselves from politics and seek readmission to continue their studies. Before long, they are forced to take up cudgels for the wronged.

The trio confronts a plethora of social problems borne out of neglect of the masses by political power centres, leading to farmer suicides, degeneration of moral values, debt crisis and corruption among officials.

The film exposes the nexus between politicians and the land mafia. In a bid to check encroachments, the Chief Minister sets up a three-man army comprising officials to demolish illegal structures.

However, they face stiff resistance when they attempt to pull down a office-cum-resort of a major political party. The work is stopped and the demolition squad is called back.

With their revolutionary spirit rekindled, the trio decides to take up arms to defend the people. Sporting caps with the visage of Che, they take up the challenge of weeding out corruption from society. The message is loud and clear — the youth should remain vigilant and fight the malaise of corruption and other evils in society.

The cast includes Nedumpram Gopi, Devi Priya, Kaimal, Biju, Mahesh, Sudhir Alappulazha, Anup, Harshan, Jayamohanan. Sabitha, costume designer and director Jayaraj’s wife, makes a cameo appearance. Lyrics of Jayaraj and Kaithapuram are set to music by Vinu Thomas. Tanu Balak cranks the camera.

Of The People is produced under the banner of New Generation Cinema.

G. Jayakumar
