Chair of Greek studies at JNU likely to be upgraded

The Chair of Greek Civilisation, Language, History and Philosophy at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies in the Capital could be upgraded to a full-fledged, advanced research centre in the near future.

Prof. U. P. Arora, who holds the Chair, is working out a proposal to develop the Chair as a “service centre” allied to different disciplines.

“The plan is at a very formative stage. We want the Chair to be developed as an advanced centre within the framework of JNU. I am currently speaking to some senior professors and will soon approach the Vice-Chancellor to discuss the same. We might talk to the Greek Embassy or other foundations for endowments,” says Prof. Arora.

“To upgrade the Chair as a research centre, we have to nurture young students as future scholars of Greek who can interact with other disciplines as well. But a lot of ground work needs to be done before finalising this plan,” he adds.

The Chair had in November organised a workshop for young scholars of JNU as well as other universities to “create Greek interest in India”. “Eminent experts discussed Greek and Indian medicine, their mythology, science, and philosophy. The idea was to give Indians a perspective on Greek civilisation and focus on the comparative aspects of the two countries,” said the professor.

The “success” of the workshop, claims Prof. Arora, has led to many students opting for Greek studies at the under-graduate level.

“The Chair runs ‘Greek Language, Literature and Culture I and II’ at the B.A. level. For M.A. students, too, we teach a specialised course on ‘Comparative Civilisation -- Indian and Greek’. This time round the seats at the B.A. level have been filled up much faster than previously,” says Prof. Arora.

“Normally we run the first semester of ‘Greek Language, Literature and Culture- I’ in August but as more students have expressed a desire to study this course, we will now organise it again in the January session,” he adds.

One of the country’s education service providers, “Career Launcher”, will soon launch its first B-school -- Indus World School of Business (IWSB) -- at Greater Noida.

The school will begin operation from this coming July and the Common Admission Test score, results of which were declared on Tuesday, would be used to select the students.

The school will run a two-year post-graduate programme and a three-year under-graduate course.

IWSB will have a fully wi-fi campus and will also be equipped with an e-library.

Faculty members of some of the leading business schools will be part of the new institute.

Ansal Institute of Technology, Gurgaon, organised a reunion function for its alumni at its campus this past week. The former students travelled from various parts of the world to attend the reunion.

On this occasion, AIT instituted two awards to recognise the accomplishments of the alumni and their contribution to the cause of the institute’s fraternity.

Global Institute of Intellectual Property (GIIP), co-headquartered in New Delhi and San Jose, US, has announced an association with the Centre for Advanced Studies and Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP), University of Washington, to collaborate for imparting world-class education in field of patents and intellectual property in India.

In a related announcement, GIIP president Atulya Nath also spoke about the newly formed alliance with Software Technology Group (STG), whereby GIIP training programmes will be available through STG’s state-of-the-art training centres at Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.
