Police step up vigil against extremists

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The district police have stepped up vigil against extremist activities and possibilities of extremists taking shelter here in the wake of the recent arrest of a suspected Hizb-ul-Mujahideen operative from Idukki.

Inspections and raids were conducted right from Tuesday through to Wednesday across the district on various hotels, tourist resorts, and houseboats, apart from checking vehicles.

The police have also begun questioning migrant labour from other States. District Superintendent of Police Ch. Nagaraju said the police would maintain a register of the migrant labour in the district. A database of photographs and fingerprints was also being prepared, particularly because the district had a regular flow of “strangers” from different states, he said.

Drives to continue

Pointing out that the raids were a fallout of the Kumily catch, Mr. Nagaraju also said such inspection drives would be continued as part of the regular vigil on criminal activity.

Though two Kashmiri carpet dealers in Alappuzha town were questioned, they were let off after their antecedents were verified with the police in Jammu & Kashmir.
