BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa government has asked the Kolkata-based private company Versha Fabrics Private Limited (VFPL) to clear all the outstanding of workers of erstwhile Hirakud Industrial Works Limited (HIWL), which was taken over by the former within the next 15 days. Employees of HIWL alleged that the VFPL had stopped paying their salaries for several months along with other benefits. A delegation of workers’ union representatives of HIWL, Hira Cable, IDCOL Rolling Mill, HIWL Contract Workers’ and Project Wing placed its grievances before State Industry Minister Biswa Bhushan Harichandan at a high level meeting here on Tuesday. They alleged that the private company had violated all terms and conditions of disinvestment it agreed to during takeover of the State-run HIWL in 2006. “Our demand was to cancel share-purchase agreement between VFPL and the State government as the private company failed to honour the agreement. But Industry Minister asked the company management to pay employees all their outstanding by January 23,” Gopakrushna Das, Working President of HIWL Workers’ Union, said. Moreover, the state Government would review the compliance of investment plan submitted by VFPL during agreement on the 20th day, Mr. Das added. The Kolkata-based company was also directed to operationalise different wings of HIWL by the time of the next review, employees’ associations said here. Stir put offAfter the declaration, workers’ unions postponed their relay hunger strike, which was to begin on January 5.
