Subsidy for cocoon sheds hiked

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The government has decided to enhance the subsidy for construction of sericulture sheds by farmers from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000 for a unit from April 1. Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveeera Reddy said on Wednesday that it was proposed to build nearly 10,000 sheds.

He urged the farmers to improve their productivity to 65 kg of cocoons out of 100 eggs with new technology emulated by their Chinese counterparts who were producing 80 kg from 100 eggs.

Mr. Raghuveera Reddy joined issue with TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu on the latter’s poser whether the Rajasekhara Reddy government, in spite of all the hype, could increase foodgrain productions even by a single tonne.

He said 162 lakh tonnes of foodgrains were produced in 2006-07 compared to 148 lakh tonnes in 2001-2002 when the TDP was in power.
