NEW DELHI: Loss of values is the root cause for the increasing number of cases of violence against women, said the country’s first woman IPS officer on Wednesday.

Releasing a new study here on “Women Top in Education: Why Miss Top Position?” prepared by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, “Super Cop” Kiran Bedi expressed concern over the increasing incidence of molestation cases across the country.

Stating that the problem started from the family and education system, Ms. Bedi said: “Not instilling proper values in children may be one of the reasons for the alarming increase in molestation cases. Another reason for the rising violence can be attributed to the direct exposure of children to violent movies, video games and Internet promoting a culture of momentary enjoyment that unfortunately comes at the cost of others’ suffering.”

Pointing out that women were achieving a lot on their own strength, the Magsaysay Award winner said today’s women were assertive in demanding their rights.

“They are breaking stereotypes despite social insecurity and non-cooperative attitude of families and society.”

Referring to the reforms in the police system, Ms. Bedi, who took voluntary retirement from the police service recently, said improvement should come from within. “Civil society needs to demand the truth from the law enforcement agencies on the actual number of crimes, as instances of non-registration of cases are many,” she added.
