BANGALORE: Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph on Wednesday said that the Bangalore Mediation Centre (BMC) was contemplating taking up pre-litigation cases and private cases.

He was speaking at an interaction with advocates, mediators and others on the premises of the Bangalore Mediation Centre on Lalbagh Road. Mr. Cyriac Joseph said that as of now, the mediation centre took up only those cases which were referred to it by a trial judge.

In future, the BMC was contemplating taking up even private cases and those that are yet to come up before the court for trial.

He said Chief Justice of India K. Balakrishnan would on January 19 inaugurate the annual day celebrations of the BMC and President Pratibha Patil would inaugurate the valedictory programme in February.

As part of the annual day celebrations of the BMC, a conference of Judges from Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu would be held in Bangalore in February.

He said efforts were under way to ensure that mediation centres were put in place on the premises of courts in all the districts.

BMC coordinator and mediator Laila Ollapally said there were 2.7 crores cases pending in trial courts and 34 lakhs cases in High Courts across the country.

High Court Judges S.R. Bannurmath, Manjula Chellur, K.L. Manjunath, N.K. Patil, K. Bhakthavatsala, Mohan Shantangouder, Jawad Rahim, N. Ananda and Ravi B. Naik, Venugopala Gowda and A. S. Pachhapure were present.
