Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has assured residents of the Capital’s unauthorised colonies that basic amenities would be provided in their colonies and directed the State Chief Secretary to personally monitor the development work there on a fortnightly basis.

Speaking at the fourth meeting of the Unauthorized Colonies Development Board on Tuesday evening, Ms. Dikshit directed all the civic agencies to work in harmony for making provisions for water, electricity, sewage, roads and sanitation in all the unauthorised colonies.

Addressing the gathering, which also included Urban Development Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan and Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, the Chief Minister said these development works should be undertaken on a priority basis so that most of the residents of unauthorised colonies could be provided with the much-needed relief soon.

Ms. Dikshit also directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Delhi Jal Board to immediately start laying sewage lines in all the unauthorised colonies.

The CEO assured her that the work would begin as soon as the layout plans were received from the Urban Development.

Senior officials of power distribution company NDPL submitted that they had already proposed installation of streetlights in 88 unauthorised colonies. They said upon the release of the sum of Rs.6.50 crore for this project, they would start implementing it.

The other discom, BSES, said it had submitted a proposal to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for providing streetlights in 100 unauthorised colonies.

It was also stated at the meeting that roads in the unauthorised colonies would be constructed by the MCD, the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department. The meeting was also told that of the 1,539 unauthorised colonies, the residents’ welfare associations of 1,350 colonies had submitted their maps for regularisation which would be sent for making the layout plan to various agencies.
