Kalyan ridicules Mayawati’s claim

Allahabad: Ridiculing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s recent claim that there was a threat to her life, the BJP on Wednesday accused the BSP Government in the State and the UPA regime at the Centre of indulging in a blame game over the issue of security.

“What would be the fate of the people of a State where the Chief Minister herself says that there is a terrorist threat to her life. This exposes the BSP’s bogus claims of ensuring the rule of law in UP,” state’s former Chief Minister and BJP vice-president Kalyan Singh told reporters here.

‘Whom does she fear’

Claiming that no party other than the BJP has been able to provide good governance in the State, Mr. Singh wondered what was preventing Ms. Mayawati from taking action against those whom she suspected of making plans to eliminate her.

In an apparent dig at the alleged autocratic style of functioning of Ms. Mayawati, Mr. Singh also asked “whom does she fear when she never cares to meet her cabinet colleagues and senior officers, leave alone the common public”.

He charged both the Centre and the UP Government of playing a blame game over the recent spurt in terrorist activities in the state, for which “both are equally responsible”. “The Centre has failed to check cross-border terrorism as it is too busy with its politics of Muslim appeasement,” he said.

Mr. Singh also came down heavily on the BSP government for having annulled the appointment of over 20,000 police personnel in Uttar Pradesh, saying “I can not accept that each and every recruitment during the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime could have been unfair.

The Government can not defend its action in case of those who might have secured their jobs on merit”.

He also strongly criticised the Additional Director General of Police, who headed the inquiry into the alleged recruitment scam, for having stated that female candidates were sexually exploited during the selection process.

“Without any evidence he has in one sweeping remark cast aspersions on the character of all women who had joined the police force. Action must be taken against the officer who has made irresponsible comments while holding a high office,” the former Chief Minister said.

The BJP leader also criticised the State Government for Tuesday’s lathicharge on Samajwadi Party workers and Wednesday’s police firing in Etawah which has claimed one life saying “it is not enforcement of law and order but political vendetta”. PTI
