Modernise Government cement factory: CPI

Staff Reporter

State urged to announce a compensation of Rs.5,000 an acre

for crop damages

ARIYALUR: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the State Government to initiate steps to modernise the ‘Arasu Cement’ factory, run by the Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation, near here for stepping up its productivity and profitability.

A resolution adapted to this effect at its meeting held here recently, said that the factory should be modernised through the use of latest technological developments in the production sector. The scope for expansion was also bright, as the limestone in a vast area of lands owned by it, was yet to be mined out.

The expansion and modernisation, the resolution added, would avoid the need for importing cement and also result in improving the productivity and profitability of the factory. Another resolution urged the State Government to announce a compensation of Rs.5,000 an acre to the farmers whose crop had been badly damaged by last month’s torrential rain. Maize-growers, chilly cultivators, groundnut farmers and paddy cultivators had been hard hit by the flood-like situation in parts of the district, the resolution pointed out.

The meeting, through a resolution, urged the district administration to initiate steps for starting an additional kerosene pump to cater to the needs of the ration-cardholders in the town. There was only one pump in the town and the presence of a huge crowd often caused more inconvenience in the distribution of the commodity.

Resolutions pleading for the introduction of share-autorickshaws in the town; clearing of encroachments on the Marudaiyar River to protect the cultivable lands during floods in future; merger of the Madurakudikadu and Periyammapalayam village panchayats were also adopted on the occasion.

The District secretary of the party A. Venugopal inaugurated the meeting. The Ariyalur unit secretary T. Dhandapani and the State Executive member V. Duraimanickam were among those who spoke.
