dated January 10, 1958: Sheikh Abdullah released

Sheikh Abdullah was set free on January 8 from Kud hill station where he had been detained in a special bungalow for exactly 53 months. Sheikh Abdullah’s dismissal as Prime Minister of Kashmir immediately followed by his arrest at Gulmarg on August 9, 1953, climaxed a ten-week old crisis in the State Cabinet and the National Conference over Sheikh Abdullah’s theory of an “Independent Kashmir”. Sheikh Abdullah, then President of the conference, put forth his idea first in the conference’s working committee, but that body threw it out by an overwhelming majority.
