KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s statement that he is against the integration of the Maoists combatants in the army has drawn strong reaction from the Maoists. At a programme here on Wednesday, Maoist leaderPrachanda said the comment was tantamount to a “democratic coup”. A day after Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal’s remark that the Army should be kept out of the influence of the politics, the Prime Minister on Tuesday said Maoists combatants staying in the U.N. managed cantonments should not be integrated in it. Mr. Prachanda said, “Instead of correcting the army chief’s statement the Prime Minister has gone to saying integration will not take place. What prompted the Prime Minister to make statement that is against the interim constitution and all the past agreements reached with the Maoists?” The interim constitution says a Cabinet panel will study the issue.
