Selling cement at Rs. 200 a bag not feasible: PMK

Special Correspondent

Government should procure cement directly: Ramadoss

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi has termed “impracticable” the scheme of private cement manufacturers selling cement at Rs. 200 per bag to economically weaker sections and the lower middle class. Reacting to the proposal, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said under the scheme, the quantity of cement required would be decided by the manufacturers and not consumers.

He wondered why the Government had agreed to let private cement factories sell directly to consumers when it had announced that it would disburse cement through godowns of the Civil Supplies Corporation. Instead, the Government should directly procure cement and sell it. Otherwise, the manufacturers’ move to reduce the price would only be an eyewash.
