U.S. offers guidance on food safety agency

Staff Reporter

Kochi: Michael O. Leavitt, U.S. Secretary for Health and Human Services, said on Wednesday that the U.S. government was ready to guide the Government of India on evolving an agency on the lines of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to look at food safety issues.

He was answering a question on whether Washington planned to set up an FDA liaison office in India.

Speaking to journalists, he described his visit to Kochi port as indicating the confidence the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services had in the quality of Indian exports.

A team of officials led by Port Trust Chairman N. Ramachandran took the American delegates around.

Mr. Ramachandran made a brief presentation on the port facilities and the geographical advantages of Kochi.
