Tracing the evolution of State Assembly

Staff Reporter

Kochi: The evolution of the State Legislative Assembly over the years and the role played by it in framing Kerala society are the focus of an exhibition that began here on Wednesday.

The exhibition is being organised at the EMS Memorial Town Hall as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Assembly.

Photographs of leaders of the Travancore Legislative Assembly greet visitors to the exhibition hall. Then there are the photographs of the rulers of the erstwhile Travancore and Kochi States. The photographs of members of the first Legislative Assembly and Prime Ministers, and Chief Ministers of the State up to 1956 are also on display.

Rare photographs that capture the historical and political evolution of the State Assembly are the highlight of the exhibition. These include a photograph of the former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru addressing the State Assembly.

On the dais were the former Chief Minister E.M.S. Namboodiripad and the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Front pages of newspapers that reported major developments in the State Assembly, group photos of all the Chief Ministers with their Cabinet colleagues, and those of Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the Assembly are also displayed.

A photograph shows the present Speaker K. Radhakrishnan with the former Chief Minister E.M.S. Namboodiripad before Mr. Radhakrishnan assumed office as a Minister.

Earlier, inaugurating the exhibition, Deputy Speaker Jose Baby expressed hope that the exhibition would help create political and social awareness among children. Students should be aware of the role played by the Legislative Assembly in framing society. It took up several social issues, including the land reforms Act and legislations in the education sector. All the Chief Ministers, from E.M.S. Namboodiripad to V.S. Achuthanandan, contributed immensely to society as the leaders of the State, he said. A message from V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Supreme Court judge, was read out at the meeting. K.V. Thomas, MLA, presided. K. Babu, MLA; M.A. Kuttappan, former Minister; and N.K. Jayakumar, Legislative Secretary, attended.
