‘Some KPCC members are in favour of Krishna’s return to State politics’ Differences on the issue to be sorted out Madikeri: Rajya Sabha member Prema Cariappa has said she welcomes Maharashtra Governor S.M. Krishna’s re-entry to State politics in the interests of the Congress. She was speaking to presspersons at the Srimangala Composite Pre-University College in Virajpet taluk after attending the 54th anniversary celebrations of the college, here on Wednesday. Mr. Krishna’s re-entry seemed inevitable, and a section of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) too was in favour of it. Mr. Krishna had earned a good name as Chief Minister of the State, Ms. Cariappa said. On the displeasure among some Congressmen over his re-entry, she said the differences would be sorted out. There was a demand for revamping the KPCC, and the issue would be handled by All-India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi. To a question if a special package would be released for Kodagu for improving the roads, Ms. Cariappa replied in the negative. The MP, however, said that she would write to the Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, K.H. Muniyappa, seeking funds for the purpose. Referring to the “Jamma Bane” land issue in Kodagu, Ms. Cariappa said the struggle should be taken to Bangalore instead of confining it to the district. On the problems of coffee growers, she said a delegation of growers had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently and submitted a memorandum to him. There was none in the delegation from Kodagu. Dr. Singh had responded positively to the demand. He would ask Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh to look into the grievances soon, she said. On the controversies in the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, she said a probe into the alleged irregularities there would bring out the truth. Earlier, the college administration handed over a memorandum to Ms. Cariappa seeking Rs. 24 lakh for construction of hostels for boys and girls. Addressing the students, Ms. Cariappa exhorted them to have a goal in life and pursue it diligently to achieve it. Parents and not just teachers had an important role in moulding the future of a child. The world had shrunk and there were plenty of opportunities for students, she said. The former special Deputy Commissioner H.A. Somesh, released a souvenir “Udaya.” Principal of the college B.S. Cariappa, welcomed the gathering. K.N. Jaji Uthappa presided over the function.
