Efforts on to boost cashew cultivation

Staff Reporter

THENI: Efforts are on to expand cashew cultivation area in the district as well as to boost production and marketing. The marketing committee for cashew and silk cotton will be strengthened to help farmers get a better price, Collector Har Sahay Meena said on Thursday.

Addressing a seminar on advanced techniques in cashew cultivation at Gandamanur, near here, he said additional staff would be appointed to the committee for its effective functioning. Cashew was being cultivated in over 4,000 hectares including 2,568 hectares in Mayiladumparai, 1,430 hectares in Andipatti and 350 in the adjoining areas. Perambalur, Pudukottai and Cuddalore districts were prominent cultivation centres. Cashew had been popularised among farmers in Villupuram, Sivagangai, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur and Theni districts.

Three hundred hectares were brought under cashew cultivation last year and inputs worth Rs.16 lakh given to cashew growers. Similarly, 266 hectares were added this year under the National Horticulture Mission schemes.

Mr. Meena said water and soil must be tested periodically to apply the right quantum of fertilizers to boost production. Value addition would increase the farmers’ income.

Deputy Director of Horticulture Issac Raj Viswasam said in order to get better yield, high yielding grafts varieties such as Virudhachalam-2 and 3 could be used.

Joint Director of Horticulture Sadasivam said drip irrigation, integrated pest and diseases management, would increase yield and productivity. Cashew drafts worth Rs.16.87 lakh were distributed to farmers.
