Khadi Utsav gets under way

VIZIANAGARAM: Lok Sabha member B. Jhansi Lakshmi inaugurated the Khadi Utsav-2008 at the Revenue Kalyanamandapam here on Thursday. Local MLA Kolagatla Veerabhadra Swamy, Director of KVIC K. Krishna Swamy and others were present.
The exhibition would remain open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. till January 14. A rebate of 20 per cent would be offered on all khadi items during the exhibition period.
Various products like pickles, herbal and jute products, Etikoppaka toys, soaps etc were also on display at the stalls put by artisans belong to East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.
Ms. Jhansi appealed to people to buy khadi items and encourage artisans. She also suggested that KVIC tie-up with industries to improve marketing.
Mr. Krishna Swamy regretted that the response to National Rural Employment Generation Programme that was launched in 1998 was poor.
The government had sanctioned Rs. 14 crores under the programme for four coastal districts.
