Roads, education get priority

Minister pats ZP for proper use of funds


Kakinada: The East Godavari Zilla Parishad on Thursday passed the annual budget for 2008-09, showing income of Rs. 127.002 crores, a surplus of Rs. 25.07 lakhs, over an expenditure of Rs. 126.751 crores.

In the general body meeting, Chairman Ch. Venugopala Krishna placed the budget and got it unanimously approved by members.

Mr. Venugopala Krishna said priority was given to laying roads in rural areas, distributing equipment to the physically challenged and giving incentives to children who excel in the SSC examination as part of the focus on education. Under the 73rd Constitutional amendment, the government had released a G.O. delegating financial powers to the ZP in respect of agriculture, fisheries, education, social welfare and rural water supply. Funds for these sectors would be released in March 2008.

Minister for Social Welfare Pilli Subhas Chandra Bose said priority was given to education and the uplift of SCs and STs and the ZP deserved accolades for putting the funds to proper use in the current financial year. He said a sum of Rs. 17 crores was allocated for laying of CC roads in rural areas and Rs. 3.6 crores for roads in SC habitations.

Computer education

District Collector M. Subrahmanyam said equipment costing Rs. 33 lakhs would be distributed to the physically challenged at JNTU Engineering college auditorium in Kakinada on January 19 and 20, benefiting some 2,600 persons. He also explained the progress made in Rajiv Arogyasri, NREGS and other welfare schemes.

Rajahmundry MP V. Arun Kumar sought greater emphasis on computer education in schools.
