Staff Reporter

Call for open system with academic freedom

Quality of research in State not good, says K.N. Panikkar

Change in academic atmosphere of universities sought

KANNUR: The Higher Education Council is initiating measures for structural changes in the State’s higher education sector which is in a state of stagnation, council Vice-chairman K.N. Panikkar has said. Inaugurating a one-day workshop on ‘Grading system for under-graduate courses,’ organised by the Kannur University on its Mangattuparamba campus here on Thursday, Dr. Panikkar said education was a special field which required a specialised approach.

He said the contemporary education system did not allow a teacher to use in the classroom the knowledge he or she had acquired through research. The academic atmosphere of colleges and universities should be changed to make use of the knowledge of the teacher, he said.

Calling for an open system in which teachers and students would get full academic freedom, Dr. Panikkar said the quality of research in the State was not good. Research scholars were not academically equipped, he observed. Students should be able to choose a subject of his or her choice and at the same time should have an opportunity to get learn other streams, he added.

University Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan presided over the function. State Council for Educational Research and Training Director M.H. Khader, Dhandapahi and C. Sumangala handled sessions. Council member secretary Thomas Joseph was the chief guest at the valedictory function. Pro Vice-Chancellor K. Kunhikrishnan presided over the valedictory function.
