BELLARY: The general body meeting of the Bellary Zilla Panchayat here on Wednesday expressed grave concern atthe injustice being meted out to the State and Kannadigas over the implementation of various railway projects and with regard to recruitment. They urged the Union Government in general and the Railway Ministry in particular to ensure that the injustice did not continue. In a unanimous resolution, the zilla panchayat pointed out that South Western Zone of the Railways with its headquarters in Hubli, was established only to improve the rail infrastructure in the State and to provide employment opportunities to Kannadigas. Several railway projects, including the Kottur-Harihar line and Ankola-Hubli line had been pending for years, which was affecting the development of the State. H.K. Mallikarjunaiah of the Janata Dal (Secular), who moved the motion, said that though Bellary district had been contributing Rs. 1,600-crore revenue to the railways by way of transporting iron ore and industrial products, the region had been neglected. Activists of the district unit of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike on Thursday staged a demonstration.
