Senior leader criticises nominations to standing committees

Making a point: Janata Dal (Secular) member Gurushant Pattedar speaking at the general body meeting of the Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat in Gulbarga on Thursday.

GULBARGA: Differences in the Janata Dal (Secular) in the Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat came to the fore on Thursday with one of its senior members Gurushant Pattedar coming out strongly against the party leadership for not giving adequate representation to Dalits, minorities and backward class in nominating the chairmen of the two standing committees of the zilla panchayat and instead preferring influential Reddy Lingayats for the posts.

Raising the issue immediately after the meeting began, Mr. Pattedar sought to know from zilla panchayat president Bharati S. Patil on why she had not responded to the notice given by him in November last seeking annulment of the nominations made by her to the post of chairpersons of the two standing committees.

Mr. Pattedar said that the zilla panchayat president, who was given the powers to nominate members and chairman of the standing committees by the general body, had allegedly “misused” authority and had come under the “influence” of the senior leaders of the Janata Dal (Secular) in nominating two leaders from the influential Reddy Lingayat community.

He alleged that the president had nominated the members and chairmen on the advice of a “person who is not connected with the zilla panchayat.”

Ms. Patil said the nominations had been made as per the rules and regulations and in accordance with the powers given by the general body.

Mr. Pattedar demanded the resignation Ms. Patil on the ground that she had failed to consult members before finalising the nominations. Later, he sat on a dharna in the well of the House demanding annulment of the constitution of the standing committees.

Ms. Patil and zilla panchayat vice-president Parmanna persuaded Mr. Pattedar to call off the dharna and allow the meeting to take up other issues..
