Decline in crime rate in Chikmagalur

‘Barring dacoity and cheating, there has been a sharp decrease in all other forms of crime’


CHIKMAGALUR: Superintendent of Police Vipul Kumar has said that the crime rate in Chikmagalur in 2007 had been lower compared to the previous years.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Kumar said that 3,535 cases were registered in 2007, compared to 4,990 cases in the previous year.

He said there was a decrease in major crimes like murder, assault, rape and atrocities against women and Dalits. Instructions had been given to all police stations to register all complaints.

Giving details of complaints registered in the district in the past three years, he said barring dacoity and cheating,there had been a sharp decrease in all other forms of crime.

He said e-beats had been introduced in police stations to monitor the functioning of police personnel. He said that under a new programme, constables were being made to visit all villages under their jurisdiction and enquire about local problems.

Mr. Kumar said that proposals for new police stations at Mallandur, Kerekatte and Jayapura, and traffic police stations in Kadur and Tarikere had been submitted to the Government.

Stating that the relationship between the Police and Forest department personnel was cordial, he said a list of habitual offenders had been prepared and steps taken to monitor their activities.

Of the nine anti-social elements identified in the district, he had recommended to the district magistrate to extern eight, while one had been booked under the Goonda Act. Mr. Kumar said that 88 candidates would be recruited to the District Armed Reserve shortly. He said 35 youth from naxal-affected areas had been trained in masonry. He said that through efforts of the Police Department two persons from those areas had got selected for Defence posts .
