PANAJI: Goa barge owners have demanded that the barges registered under the Inland Vessels Act, 1917 be brought under the purview of the tonnage tax regime with immediate effect. A delegation of the Goa Barge Owners’ Association, led by president Atul V. Jadhav, which represents 120 members owning about 182 barges, met T.R. Baalu, Minister for Shipping and Road Transport, and submitted a memorandum on their demands to him. The memorandum said that the barge industry in Goa had been facing a problem of “plenty”. The increase in the quantum of exports in recent years had led to an increase in the number of barges. This had resulted in a fall in the number of trips each barge made.
