Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: The Kombakkam People’s Welfare Association on Thursday urged the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation to operate services to Kombakkam village which linked Puducherry and Villianur. President of the association S. Janarthanan said in a statement here that over 30,000 people residing in 15 villages around Kombakkam found it difficult to reach their workplaces, owing to inadequate transport facility. The State-owned transport corporation had not introduced services to Kombakkam, he said, adding that only two private buses had been plying on this route. A large number of commuters, including students belonging to these villages, were unable to reach the educational institutions in Puducherry and Villianur in time as they had to depend on the two private buses. Overloading also led to frequent accidents along the route, he said. Several industrial units manufacturing leather goods, soap, hardboard and beverages were located in the area, Mr. Janarthanan said. Additional bus service had to been ensured to meet the requirements of the workers employed in these units. Introduction of more buses would help patients going to Puducherry Government General Hospital for treatment, he said.
