Krishnaiah threatens fast
R. Krishnaiah
HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association president R. Krishnaiah has threatened to launch an indefinite hunger strike from January 28 if the government does not concede the long pending demands of the association.
Main demands
The association has been demanding that the government bear the fee of students hailing from BC communities undertaking courses in private professional colleges on the lines of SCs and STs, enhance mess charges in tune with the rising prices, set up of 300 hostels exclusively for girls from BC communities and regularise services of over 50,000 daily wage workers in different government departments.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Krishnaiah said though the association had organised over 180 demonstrations and rallies over the past three-and-a-half years, the government had not conceded the demands. The government had also not announced concrete measures for artisans hit hard by globalisation. In addition, there was no proper budgetary allocation for the schemes announced for BCs that prompted the association to mount pressure on the government, he said adding the government should take the responsibility for the consequences of the indefinite fast.
