BJP gets into election mode

VISAKHPATNAM: The Bharatiya Janata Party has begun its exercise to prepare for the Lok Sabha elections which it expects to be held this year.

Announcing this at a media conference here on Thursday, State BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya said as part of this he had come to meet the party leaders of the three north Andhra districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam to discuss strategies to face situations, selection of candidates, and changing political scenario. “Today, the political situation may change unexpectedly. New equations, coalitions and realignment of forces is likely,” he felt.

On the remarks of Congress leader in charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs, Veerappa Moily, that the wind favoured Congress, the BJP leader said that he had got it all wrong. In fact, there was opposition to the ruling party as the Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had failed to keep his pre-poll promises. “We have many arrows to tackle the Congress. This year 2008 will be a year of movements against the Government policies to prepare for the elections. The farmers in the state are unhappy and the setting of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) is strongly resented at places like Atchutapuram in Visakhapatnam and Kakinada,” he said.

Meet on Telangana

Replying to questions, Mr. Dattatreya said that an emergency meeting of the party leaders in Telangana districts would beheld on January 13 to discuss future course of action. “We have launched a massive signature campaign programme in Telangana under the name `Telangana Kranti, Santakala Sankranti. People belonging to all political parties like TDP, TRS, CPI and even CPI-M and Congress are appending their signature for a separate Telangana state. The second phase will be held from January 16 to 31. We are planning a huge movement on second SRC. The BJP on its part is committed to smaller states and Telangana will be our main weapon,” he said.

BJP national executive member K. Haribabu, state leaders Bandaru Rangamohan, J. Prithviraju and Ramakotaiah were present.
