SHIMLA: Senior Congress leader and former State Minister Vidya Stokes was unanimously elected the new Himachal Pradesh Congress Legislature Party leader here on Thursday. Despite strong resistance by former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and his camp claiming majority support in the party, Central party observers Mohsina Kidwai and R. K. Dhawan conveyed the high command’s decision in favour of Ms. Stokes. Sensing the mood of the party high command against him this time, Mr. Singh did not throw in his candidature for the CLP leadership. Observers later claimed that it was a smooth election and Ms. Stokes was elected by voice vote. A one-line resolution was passed in her favour and the consensus was achieved. In an interesting development, PCC president Viplov Thakur offered her resignation to the observers owning moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the elections. But party insiders said it was not likely to be accepted.
