CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday announced that his Government was committed to reducing the maternal mortality rate to less than 100 by the year 2010 from 162 per lakh live births at present. Delivery practicesInaugurating a two-day meeting on Millennium Development Goals with Focus on Maternal Mortality in South Asian Countries at Suraj Kund Tourist Complex in Faridabad district, Mr. Hooda reiterated that his regime had introduced many schemes to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates and had given high priority to the promotion of clean and safe delivery practices especially in the rural areas for making the Maternal Health Programme broad-based and client-friendly. The meeting is being organised by the India Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development. Under one scheme christened as “Janani Suraksha Yojana”, cash incentives ranging from Rs.500 to 800 were being given to mothers belonging to Below Poverty Line and Scheduled Castes families in rural and urban areas for undergoing institutional and home deliveries, he added . He announced an increase in the cash incentive for mothers belonging to Scheduled Caste families from the next financial year.
