Nod for 1,079 works under rural employment guarantee scheme

TIRUNELVELI: Administrative sanction has been given for undertaking 1,079 works in the district under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) on an outlay of Rs. 41.22 crore during the current financial year, the Collector, G. Prakash, has said.
In a statement, he said that the works under NREGP, which was launched by the Centre with the aim of providing employment for a minimum of 100 days a year to every willing family, were being executed in all 425 village panchayats.
Families, who had expressed their willingness to work under this scheme, were being given employment identity cards even as 1,90,935 families had come forward to work. A total of 33,185 members in 15,457 families have worked in the ongoing projects to get a salary of Rs.1.63 crore for completing the prescribed quantum of the work. The assured wage of Rs.80 a day would be given to the workers only when they completed the prearranged quantum of the job.
“If a person can dig a pit measuring 27 feet length, 20 feet width and 1 foot depth for a tank after clearing the bushes or dig a channel or form earthen road measuring 60 feet length, 10 feet width and 1 foot depth after clearing the bush, the labourer will be given Rs.80 a day. Or else, a cut will be effected in the wage according to the quantum of work to be completed,” he said.
