Each family, irrespective of the number of persons, which can take up manual work, will be provided a minimum of 100 days of work in a financial year under the NREG programme and each member will be eligible to draw a maximum of Rs.80 a day as wages.

Any person, who had completed 18 years of age, can apply for work under the NREG programme to the panchayat president concerned, who will be issuing a photo identity card after ascertaining whether the applicant is capable of taking up works to be executed manually.

The responsibility of identifying or selecting works to be executed manually with the help of locally available manpower will be entrusted to a committee comprising the panchayat president, the vice-president, the ward member of the area, where the work is to be taken up, and a representative from self-help group.

An SC/ ST community representative will be included in the committee, which will also monitor the progress of works taken up under the NREG programme.

Kancheepuram Collector Santosh K.Misra said priority would be given to desilting and strengthening of bunds of around 2800 tanks and ponds maintained by panchayats and panchayat unions.

Formation of new ponds or small waterbodies and irrigation canals, strengthening of bunds of waterbodies, other works aimed to achieve water conservation and flood prevention would also be taken up under the NREG programme.

Fiat to panchayat chiefs

Tiruvallur Collector Rajendrakumar said the panchayat presidents had been advised to take up formation of link roads and desilting of canals or channels under this programme.

They were also directed to take up any suitable works as per the NREG programme guidelines to help create a durable asset for the benefit of the local people.
