CHENNAI: More than three years after work began on the flyover along Chakrapani Road and M.K.N. Road in Maduvankarai, the project is yet to be completed.

Residents recall that initially the work was moving rapidly, but later it was abandoned for no apparent reasons.

The unfinished flyover now provides a handy parking space for private taxis, autorickshaws and individual vehicles along the stretch, who utilise both the underside and the unfinished top portion to park vehicles. Residents raise questions about whether such parking is permissible or safe.

The M.K.N. Road arm of the flyover seems to have become the casualty in the blame-game among government bodies. Highways officials have said earlier that land acquisition was problematic, since the flyover straddles the Chennai and Kancheepuram Collectorates.

Parking on unfinished structures is undesirable but is unlikely to be dangerous, they said. Residents wondered whether discussions between the two adjoining Collectorates should take years for arriving at a consensus.

Work on the flyover commenced in late 2004. Since then, residents moving back home in the area and traffic headed for Adambakkam make their way through the congested road space.

For reaching Adambakkam, both large and small vehicles are diverted through the narrow Vandikaran Street and Pillayar Koil Street.

Residents had earlier complained that the debris dumped around the flyover was further slowing down traffic and hindering movement.
