Physiotherapists seek PHC posting

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Around 800 physiotherapists participated in a daylong fast on Sunday demanding that the State Government take steps to ensure that their services reached the rural areas. The physiotherapists wanted the government to appoint a physiotherapist in each primary health centre in the State. “The World Health Organisation stipulates that there should be a physiotherapist for a population of 10,000. Every PHC caters to a population of 30,000 and these people would benefit,” said V. Krishnakumar, president of Forum for Physiotherapists.

The Forum members said the government had announced in the 2007 budget that it would set up a council, but had not implemented it. Members want physiotherapy to be recognised as an independent system of medicine. It was recognised as a paramedical science, but now the physiotherapists gained enough training and can diagnose and treat the patient, he said.

Rehabilitation programme

The Social Welfare Department has a rehabilitation programme for special schools, which would also require our services, Mr. Krishnakumar pointed out. “The government should focus on rehabilitation and preventive physiotherapy. It is important to bring back a person to normal working life. Many people spend lakhs of rupees on surgery but do not have the money to take up physiotherapy. If it is made a service then they would benefit,” he said. Therapy would also prevent surgery among people suffering from osteoarthritis, a silent disease in rural areas, he pointed out.
