Corrections and clarifications

The heading, “`Socialist’ tag in statute challenged” (January 9, 2008) is challenged by a reader who says “statute” is any written law enacted by a legislative, and does not mean the Constitution. Dictionaries uphold the lawyer’s contention.

The name of the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer is R. Ramaseshan and not Ramseshan, said an entry in these columns on January 4, 2008. Obviously this has not registered, a reader points out. Six days later the wrong spelling appears again on Page 1 (“EC team checks State’s preparedness for polls,” Karnataka, Page 1, January 10, 2008.)

Correction in correction: Ana Ivanovic lost to Peng Shuai (“Sharapova enters final,” Sport, January 5, 2008) and the results column entry was incorrect (not correct, as published yesterday).
