Strengthen public transport: Pachauri

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: R. K. Pachauri, Director-General of Tata Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), clarified on Thursday that he had nothing against the concept of the small car launched by Tata Motors or any particular manufacturer, and he was only worried about the usage. Reacting to questions from reporters at a function here, Dr. Pachauri said the new small cars would cause congestion on the roads and had environmental problems. “We should strengthen our public transport system instead,” he added.

While launching ‘Nano’ Mr. Ratan Tata had said that Dr. Pachauri “will not have nightmares” as the car met Bharat-III and globally accepted emission norms.

Dr. Pachauri, chairman of the Nobel prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, had feared that the vehicle could cause high pollution.
