Congress Core Group discusses budget priorities

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: A meeting of the extended Congress Core Group was held on Thursday at Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s residence to discuss the road map for the Union Budget.

The Core Group comprises Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ms. Gandhi, Union Ministers Pranab Mukherjee, A.K. Antony, Arjun Singh and Ahmed Patel.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Commerce Minister Kamal Nath also joined the discussions.

Each Minister gave his view on the priorities for the budget to be presented in Parliament in February.

Eye on elections

The common refrain was that the budget should be prepared keeping in view the forthcoming elections in several States and the general elections.

Earlier, the Prime Minister called on President Pratibha Devisingh Patil.

They discussed issues relating to Dr. Singh’s forthcoming visit to China and reviewed recent national developments, including the follow-up action on the Report of the Delimitation Commission.
