Maharashtra houses for tsunami-hit
Special Correspondent
MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh will hand over to his Puducherry counterpart on Saturday 500 houses built for the tsunami-affected people in the Union Territory.
These are part of the 1,668 houses the government is building in 12 places at a cost of Rs. 60 crore.
Three hundred houses at Virampattinam are named after Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. At Karikalmedu where there are 120 houses, it is called Mahatma Phule Nagar.
Eighty houses at Kilinjalmedu forming the third cluster will be named after Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, official sources said on Thursday.
In six villages, the houses will be ready by March while in the remaining places, the government is acquiring land. The Maharashtra government wanted to project these as a model of rehabilitation. These houses are equipped with rain water harvesting and solid waste management facilities.
The settlements have drainage, children’s parks and open spaces.
