TEMPORARY MOVE: Vendors reoccupy their places near the Mambalam railway station shortly after being evicted on Thursday.
Chennai: The Chennai Corporation removed makeshift shops that had encroached upon a stretch of Madley Road and Railway Border Thottam in T. Nagar on Thursday.
However, many of the vendors returned to their usual spot within three hours of the eviction.
Chennai Corporation officials said the eviction drive was taken up to ease vehicular movement on Madley Road and pedestrian movement on Market Road near the Mambalam Railway Station. The removal of encroachments has been a long pending demand by residents of Madley Road.
About 50 makeshift shops, including tea stalls, were removed. Vegetable and flower vendors who sold their wares on the pavements left the place when the eviction drive was on but returned later. A Corporation official said the drive would continue till encroachments were cleared.
The Corporation also continued the demolition of a commercial building on Wall Tax Road.
