Medical college move opposed

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

NEW DELHI: Medical graduates of Delhi University have opposed the move by officials of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College at Safdarjung Hospital here to have their medical graduates counted as Delhi University students.

This will allow medical graduates of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College to avail themselves of 50 per cent reservation for post-graduate medical seats in the Capital now available only to Delhi University students.

Medical students of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) and Lady Hardinge Medical College on Monday submitted a one-page petition to senior Delhi University officials asking them to not allow medical graduates from Vardhman Mahavir Medical College — which is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University here —to be counted as Delhi University students. “There is a feeling of despair and if the proposal gets cleared it will only push medical graduates to look for greener pastures overseas,” said MAMC Students’ Union president Abhishek Bansal.

They also allege that Vardhman Mahavir College officials were trying to ensure that post-graduate seats in their hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital be reserved for their students.
